Laos Cave Rescue 2026: Tham Luang Divers Return for Seven Trapped Gold Miners

Seven Laotian villagers walked into an artisanal gold mine in Xaisomboun province on May 19, 2026, and a week later the mine has not let them out.

A monsoon that arrived early

The prospectors entered the shaft to pull ore from the ground, a routine attempt at local income in a country where, by Local10's reporting, annual per-capita income runs roughly $2,000 to $2,500. Heavy early-monsoon rainfall then struck the region. Water poured into the hand-dug tunnel and flooded it faster than the group inside could move. Three other villagers who were positioned near the entrance outran the rising water, scrambled clear, and alerted local authorities. The seven who were deeper in the shaft did not get out.

The mine sits in the Long Chanh district of Xaisomboun province in central Laos, roughly 120 kilometers, about 78 miles, north-northeast of the capital, Vientiane. Reaching it is its own ordeal. Villagers cut a 2.5-mile road through dense jungle by hand so rescue vehicles could approach the base of the mountain. From the end of that improvised road, responders still face a four-kilometer steep hike up the mountainside to the cave entrance, and initial teams trekked up to two hours through rough terrain before they could even lay eyes on the mouth of the shaft. The geography is a barricade before the floodwater is even a problem.

The seven miners are believed to be sealed roughly 200 yards inside the earth. Authorities have not made contact with them, and they have not been located.

The Tham Luang divers, eight years later

The operation escalated on Monday, May 25, 2026, when a vanguard of international rescue specialists arrived on site. Two Thai rescue specialists and a Finnish diving expert who took part in the 2018 Tham Luang cave rescue flew into central Laos. The lead Finnish diver is Mikko Paasi, who is based in Thailand. A second named Thai diver, Norrased Palasing, also arrived that day. Claus Rasmussen, a Phuket-based diver who also worked the 2018 operation, is part of the team as well. These are not generalist responders. They are veterans of the most heavily documented cave-diving rescue of the past decade, brought back underground because the people who know how to do this work are a very small list.

In 2018, those same divers helped pull a Thai junior soccer team, the Wild Boars, 12 boys and their coach, out of the Tham Luang cave system in Chiang Rai province in northern Thailand. The boys had spent about 18 days trapped by flash floods before they were brought to the surface alive. That operation now functions as a baseline for what a multi-day cave rescue can look like and how long underground survival can stretch.

Paasi has been candid about what the team has and has not done. "We haven't found them, but the operation is escalating a lot, and we have high hopes that they are still alive," he told CBS News.

A tunnel the width of a car tire

The Laos passage is not Tham Luang. The Thai cave was a limestone system with chambers a person could stand up in. The Laotian shaft is artisanal, hand-dug, and structurally fragile. Paasi has described the conditions plainly to CBS News: "The collapse risks are high because you're constantly touching the roof, and it's hand-dug. There's no support anywhere."

The spatial constraints inside are unusually punishing for cave divers. The submerged passage is roughly the width of a car tire. It is too narrow for a diver to turn around in, and too narrow for a diver to keep a scuba tank on their back. The divers drag their tanks behind them and exhale to squeeze through the tightest sections. The floodwater is coffee-colored and offers zero visibility, so they navigate by fingertip in total darkness while contending with hypothermia and strong currents. Paasi has spelled out the geometry of what could go wrong: "If there's a body, somebody in front of you, you're stuck. And there's no way to turn around until you hit the next chamber, which can be 100 meters forward."

The progress so far reflects how slowly that geometry forces the work to move. Dive teams have pushed approximately 100 meters into the cave. The trapped miners are believed to be about 30 meters beyond that point. The remaining distance is short on a map and very long underwater.

What is on the surface, and what is not

Outside the mine, the response is large. About 100 rescuers from Laos and Thailand are clustered at the site, including soldiers, police, medical staff, and volunteers, with Chinese rescue teams assisting. Crews have hauled heavy infrastructure up the mountain and built out an operation hub: high-capacity water pumps, generators, thermal imaging devices, Wi-Fi, and electricity. Coordination on the ground is being handled in part by Bounkham Luanglat, president of a Laotian volunteer rescue association.

None of that machinery helps inside the tunnel. The operation underwater is entirely dependent on the physical endurance of the divers in the constricted passage. The hazards inside the cave compound by the hour: hypothermia, carbon-dioxide buildup, food and water shortage, the threat of the hand-dug roof collapsing, and the currents themselves. Luanglat has been straightforward with reporters about how little is known about the seven miners' condition. "We still do not know whether there are any signs of life or if they are still alive," he told CBS News.

Why a hand-dug shaft, and why now

Artisanal gold prospecting is the through line that explains why seven villagers were inside an unsupported tunnel in the first place. With per-capita income in Laos at roughly $2,000 to $2,500, the calculation that takes a small group into a hand-dug shaft to look for ore is not adventurism. It is economic. That context does not make the rescue easier, but it is the reason this story exists at all: a routine localized effort to pull ore from the ground became a deadly entrapment when the monsoon arrived early.

The dive teams have not changed their working assumption. As Rasmussen put it to Local10, "Here it is still a rescue until proven otherwise." Asked by CBS News whether the seven could still be alive, Paasi was characteristically measured: "Of course, I do hope and believe."

As of the seventh day of the disaster, the seven trapped men have not been located, and the operation continues.
